Adventure and challenge have been a real theme at ĢƵ this week. On Tuesday, we were delighted to welcome Adrianna Brownlee and Gelje Sherpa into school. They were quite an inspiration and students enjoyed hearing about their amazing mountaineering adventures. You can read more about the visit in the newsletter. We also celebrated our GCSE and AS level awards and I will share some photos with you next week.
Expeditions are taking place over the next two weeks with Secondary students departing on Monday and Primary students leaving the week after. There is a wide range of activities planned that support the students’ development physically, socially and in their critical thinking skills. Keep an eye on our social media for updates.
We have a number of students currently in the United States attending the World Scholars Cup Tournament of Champions. We are looking forward to hearing about all of their success and learning on their return. Rumour has it they might need extra suitcases to bring back all of their medals and trophies!
I am always pleased to welcome students and parents at the school gates in the morning and it provides a very positive start to the day as I see everyone entering, ready to engage in their learning for the day. However, I have recently noticed a pattern of some students arriving by motorbike without a helmet, and also some on bicycles without a cycle helmet. We want to ensure that students are safe and are aware of how to protect themselves on the roads and wearing a helmet plays a significant role in this. Your head contains a very important part of your body, your brain! Use your brain to make sure you are preparing for a safe journey to school and wear a helmet!

ĢƵ teams have qualified through the Kathmandu Round in January and then the Doha Round in June to make the global finals of this exciting academic competition. The team arrived late on Monday and spent two days resting, recovering from jet lag and enjoying the sites of the city before travelling to the university in Connecticut. We look forward to hearing of their competitive successes and seeing their giant alpacas in next week’s Yeti news.
Sports Report
NISSA Report: Great wins for boys and girls NISSA teams
This week we had a very busy week of NISSA fixtures with teams away on Monday taking on Rato Bangala and then hosting Premier on Thursday in the last match of the League prior to the Season Finals being hosted by GEMS on Sunday 23rd November.
Information about how ĢƵ supporters can sign up for this will be given out following Secondary Expedition week with a deadline to register attendance by Wednesday 19th November.
Boys Football vs Ratobangala (Pratham)
Result RBS 2 : 3 ĢƵ
Boys Football vs Premier (Saugat Basnet)
The Boys’ Senior Football team faced Premier in their final regular season fixture, ending in a thrilling 3–3 draw. The match was full of intensity and end-to-end action, with both sides creating plenty of chances and committing a few tough fouls along the way. ĢƵ had an incredible goal controversially disallowed but stayed composed, with Abdul (Yr13), Tashi (Yr13), and Aryaver (Yr10) finding the back of the net. Despite a strong performance and leading for most of the game, the boys conceded an equalizer in the final moments. Overall, it was a solid performance and a valuable experience for the team as they look ahead to the NISSA finals, marking a strong end to their regular season fixtures.
Girls Basketball vs Ratobangala (Avani Thapa)
In a tough match, the girls’ basketball team lost to Rato Bangala by a score of 22-11. Although we were not able to secure the victory, our improvement since the first match against Ullens was very apparent. Through the hard work and determination displayed by both the coaches and students alike, the team played a strong game by not going down without a fight.
Girls Basketball vs Premier (Adiba Nabi)
The ĢƵ girls’ basketball team won an astounding match against Premier, making their first win of this season. The match started off slow, with Premier in the lead at a score of 6-4, but quick substitutions and strategic gameplay from the team members caused a quick turnover and rapid scoring, particularly during the third quarter of the match. Scorers included Ghazal Parshahri, Avani Thapa, Aisa Tsujii and Iksana Gurung, totaling a victory of 21-7 in a spectacular display of the team’s athletic performance.
U15 FOBISIA Games Squads in action vs Whitefield School in Basketball
On Wednesday afternoon, our U15 FOBISIA Games teams were able to get in some highly valuable pre-tournament competitive match practice, when we hosted students from the Whitefield School.
Both teams performed very well and it was great to get some pre-trip jitters out of the way as well as identify strengths and also areas to keep focusing on improving before the team depart for FOBISIA in just two short weeks!
The girls won convincingly 12-2 while the boys enjoyed a very competitive game against a very skilled opposition team and also came out as victors 17-11.
Well done to all the players and especially Mr Malla who has done a great job with developing both teams skills!
Secondary Assembly: Adriana Brownlee, youngest woman to summit the 14 peaks and Mountain Rescue Professional Gelje Sherpa visit ĢƵ
By: Upasana & Saanvi (Y11)
On Tuesday this week, we had the privilege of welcoming two legendary mountaineers. This included Adriana Brownlee, the youngest woman to climb all 14 eighteen-thousanders, holding 3 Guinness world records while also being the youngest woman to summit the world’s second highest peak, K2. Our other guest was Gelje Sherpa, one of the best sherpa guides in the world, also with an impressive list of achievements, including summiting the world’s highest peaks over 35 times, completing over 40 successful rescues, and also being the youngest person to summit K2 in winter. Together, Adriana and Gelje co-founded AGA Adventures, a trekking and expedition company that blends with their passion for mountaineering with a mission to make the Himalayas accessible and unforgettable.
During the assembly in which we had the opportunity to meet these inspiring individuals, our sports and head prefects, Pratham, Abdul and Reha conducted an interview, asking questions about the mountaineering journeys of our guests and what inspired them to achieve such challenging feats. Adriana Brownlee opened up about her childhood life and how her father was her greatest inspiration to begin her journey at such a young age, while Gelje Sherpa gave an motivational speech on how to navigate through difficult times. Their visit was a truly encouraging experience, especially before Expedition Week where many students are challenging themselves to step out of their comfort zones. The assembly was more than just an interview, it was a powerful reminder that extraordinary achievements begin with ordinary steps, and that with passion and perseverance, even the highest peak can be reached.
After visiting Secondary at the assembly, our guests also stayed to meet the younger students in Primary. Though they are still young, this was a great experience for them to learn about how far hard work and dedication can take you. Overall, meeting Adriana Brownlee and Gelje Sherpa motivated students across the school to take on new challenges and push their limits.
Reading taken to the next level
Written and reported by Avigya Chamling and Sofia Palmer
“Battle of the Books is a great opportunity to read a ton of new books and discover new genres you might like.” – Ms Sunita Chitrakar, Senior Librarian and event organiser.
ĢƵ is proud to announce the 4th annual KISC vs ĢƵ vs Rato Bangala battle of the books competition in ĢƵ happening sometime in May 2026 (to be confirmed), to promote reading, and so that ĢƵ students can socialise with other students from other schools.
The competition will consist of your team firstly reading 20 different hand-picked books by the event organisers from a range of genres, which are all available to borrow at the secondary library. “Battle of the Books really made me discover new books and genres”, reported Sofia Palmer, Year 8, a participant last year, after she and her team enjoyed reading last year’s books. About a month before the competition, if your team is still committed towards the competition, a selection round will be held, regardless of whether your team has read all the books or not, with other ĢƵ teams. During the selection round, information and clues will be given about a book in the list, which will vary throughout the questions, and teams have to guess that book within a 30-second time limit. At the end, bonus questions about some of the books requiring more detail will also be given, which are worth more points than the quickfire questions. The top 2 teams with the highest points will go to the actual competition. The real competition will not be much different from the selection round, except that instead of competing with only ĢƵ teams, students will also be competing against KISC and Rato Bangala teams. Variochana Vias Gurung from Year 7, a finalist last year, quoted that “I enjoyed going to KISC and meeting new people there the most in the competition”. Trophies and medals will be awarded to winning teams, along with certificates, which will be given to every participating team.
Unfortunately, the competition is open to students from Years 7 to 9 only to keep it fair. However, if you are a student from Year 7 to 9 and you want to participate, please make a team of 2 to 5 people and inform Ms Sunita Chitrakar at the Secondary library of the names of your teammates on a school day between 08:00 and 16:30 or via email at schitrakar@tbs.edu.np. Along with a team name, which can earn your team extra points if creative. Can ĢƵ keep its title as the reigning Battle of the Books champion? Think you got what it takes? Quickly sign up and prove it.
Awards Events
ĢƵ celebrated the academic successes of all its current KS5 students at our annual GCSE and AS awards events. We were delighted to welcome his excellency Mr Rob Fenn, the British Ambassador and Ms Premila Paulraj from Pearson Edexcel as our guest speakers and presenters. For the first time in a number of years we were very pleased to be able to present students’ actual exam certificates which arrived at school earlier this week.
Primary News
Another Exciting Week in Primary!
We have had another exciting week across the Primary phase as our students from Early Years through to Year 6 have been fully immersed in their IPC unit of work focused on theatre and performing arts.
Throughout the week, our classrooms and corridors have been buzzing with creativity as children have been developing their art and design skills alongside design technology. From creating props and scenery to designing costumes and exploring different artistic techniques, our students have been discovering the many elements that bring a theatrical production to life.
Of course, the highlight of this work has been the busy preparations for our upcoming winter shows! Students have been rehearsing enthusiastically, perfecting their performances, and working collaboratively to ensure their productions will be memorable experiences for all. The dedication, teamwork, and creative flair our children have demonstrated throughout this process has been truly impressive.
We look forward to sharing these wonderful performances with you all very soon. Watch this space for further details about show dates and times!
Bah Humbug Entry Point
Year 6 launched their Bah Humbug entry point by stepping back in time to 1843! They experienced what school life was like in the time of Charles Dickens, complete with very strict teachers, writing with ink pens, and practising on chalkboards. Students also explored Victorian crafts and design by stitching their initials in a seamstress workshop, creating signboards using Victorian-style lettering, and sketching a Victorian street scene in one-point perspective. Year 6 are now ready to begin planning and preparing for their upcoming production of Bah Humbug!
Stewardship
As part of their IPC learning and the ĢƵ values of Thriving, Belonging and Stewardship, Year 6 students have been exploring what it truly means to be a good steward; someone who takes responsibility for caring for people, places, and the planet. They worked collaboratively to design and deliver their own stewardship projects, developing strong teamwork, leadership, and organisational skills along the way. The groups led eco-art activities with Early Years, supported Year 1 and 2 students with fun and educational eco challenges, organised kindness activities, a poetry and art contest and presented an assembly on the importance of stewardship. Through these projects, Year 6 demonstrated responsibility, creativity, and care for their school community and environment.
Mountaineer Visit in EYFS
This week, our EYFS children were inspired by the incredible story of Tenzing Norgay who, along with Sir Edmund Hillary, was the first to conquer Mount Everest. This week, we were delighted to welcome British mountaineer Adriana Brownlee, the youngest woman to climb all 14 of the world’s highest peaks, alongside legendary Nepali climber Gelje Sherpa. The children were excited to ask questions about their adventures and eager to see some of the specialist clothing climbers wear when taking on such challenges.
Remembrance Day
This week was our annual Remembrance Assembly to mark Remembrance Day on 11th November. It was a poignant and reflective occasion where we honoured the memory of those who have served and sacrificed in conflicts around the world, including the brave British Gurkhas Nepal who have served as part of the British Armed Forces with such distinction. Students observed a respectful moment of silence and reflected on the importance of peace, understanding, and working together to build a more harmonious world. We were proud to see our students approach this assembly with such maturity and thoughtfulness, demonstrating our school values of compassion and community. Thank you to all the families who supported the Poppy Appeal – your contributions will support veterans and their families through the Royal British Legion.
Student Teacher Orientation and Induction
We are delighted to welcome student teachers from ECEC (The Early Childhood Education Centre) on Thursday for their orientation, safeguarding training, and induction. Our EYFS and KS1 team have been running a series of comprehensive workshops to prepare these future educators for their upcoming placement, which begins on 10th November. We are excited to be working with a cohort of 81 student teachers, providing them with valuable hands-on experience in an international school setting and sharing our ethos of play based learning experiences and free flow activities with them. This partnership not only supports the development of the next generation of teachers but also enriches our school community through the energy and fresh perspectives they bring. We look forward to welcoming them into our classrooms and supporting their professional growth throughout their placement.
Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) Parent Information Sessions
We held parent information sessions across all year groups from Year 1 to Year 6 focused on our Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) unit of work which is part of our PSHE curriculum. These sessions have been designed to share information about our RSE curriculum, the age-appropriate content covered at each year level, and the pedagogical approaches we use to deliver this important aspect of our children’s education. We believe that strong home-school partnerships are essential when teaching RSE, and these sessions provide valuable opportunities for parents to ask questions, share any concerns, and understand how they can support their child’s learning at home. We are grateful to all the parents who have attended these sessions and engaged in these important conversations about supporting our children’s personal, social, and emotional development.
Little Yetis: ‘Let’s Make Music’
Our Little Yetis preschool provision has been exploring the exciting theme of ‘Let’s Make Music’ this week! Our youngest learners have been discovering the joy of rhythm, sound, and melody through a variety of engaging activities. We were very excited to have our music specialists join the Little Yetis to run some special activities, bringing their expertise and enthusiasm to enhance the children’s musical experiences. From exploring different instruments to singing songs and creating rhythms, our Little Yetis have been fully immersed in the wonderful world of music. It has been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they experiment with sounds and express themselves creatively through music. The smiles and laughter coming from the Little Yetis has brightened our week!
