ĢƵ proves successful in the formidable Battle of the Books!

By Avigya

On Tuesday, 5th May ĢƵ proudly and happily participated in the annual Battle of the Books competition for years 6 to 9, against KISC and Rato Bangala, held at KISC.

From our school, the teams that participated were ‘Reading Rebels Returned’ including Renee, Juhi, Arya and Avigya, all from Year 7. And ‘Flappy Tomatoes’ including Luveena and Adeline both from year 9, and Balark I from Year 7. The competition consisted of 4 rounds in total. Each round there included information and clues about a book from the selected 20 fictional books which all teams had to read. And then, the teams had to guess what the book was within 30 seconds, getting extra points if they also said the author of that book.

Each round had a topic which the questions were based on, round 1 being character, round 2 being antagonist, and round 3 being about plot and setting.

“ The best part of the competition is getting the question correct after 30 seconds of stress and anticipation,” said Juhi Shrestha.

At the end of the 3rd round, there was a bonus round in which teams had to answer in detail 6 comprehension questions from 3 random books from the list; there were 2 questions for each of the 3 books and contestants had 10 minutes to do this.

This year, ‘Reading Rebels Return’ won 2nd place and ‘Flappy tomatoes’ won 3rd. They’ve shown the best of ĢƵ during this competition.

“I’m really proud of everyone who took part – the students’ success is their well-deserved reward for a fantastic commitment to reading. They’ve shown the best of ĢƵ during this competition.”

– Mr Johnston

Overall, this competition was very fun and successful. As Renee said, “ I really enjoyed the competition and the books.” The writer, me, being a person who participated in this competition twice now, made me explore genres I would not visit and know what I would like if it were not for Battle of the Books. Alongside this, it also taught me reading habits that I will never forget. I highly recommend any year 6-9 students to participate in this competition as I surely will next year, and I hope we can showcase the same amount of greatness (if not better) in future competitions!

By Meekha and Shajonee

Enrichment week choices have just been announced at this week’s whole school assembly. The options range from birdwatching and sewing, to the new Library Development Project and writing children’s books. The selections allow for each individual student to explore their interests while still learning throughout the entire week. ĢƵ values the development of various skills outside academics, along with exploring hobbies and interests of the children and teachers, and enrichment week activities offer them the opportunity to partake in these or for them to try something new, learn new skills, and make new friends.

The options for enrichment week include:
